List of Florida Dental Colleges

Students looking to pursue a career in dentistry have several options in the state of Florida. The University of Florida is the only publicly funded dental school in the state, but Florida has private colleges that offer both undergraduate and post-graduate degrees. The state also has colleges that teach students to become dental assistants.
  1. University of Florida College of Dentistry

    • Established in 1972, the University of Florida College of Dentistry Overview is located on the Health Science Center campus in Gainesville. The only publicly funded dental school in the state, the College of Dentistry offers future dentists and dental specialists 16 different degree and certificate programs. The college also has advanced research programs emphasizing infectious diseases in dentistry, bone biology and ways to improve clinical and dental care. The College of Dentistry has become one of the largest providers of low-cost dental care in the state. The students and faculty also provide free dental care to the poor both in the United States and abroad.

    Central Florida Institute

    • The Central Florida Institute (CFI) has campuses in both Orlando and the Tampa Bay area. The college offers courses in the dental assistant field that cover basic care along with knowledge of radiology and how it is used in a dentist office. Students in CFI's dental assistant training program learn how to perform clinical, administrative and radiology dental procedures. CFI students also are prepared for careers in various dental disciplines such as general practice and specialty dentist offices that perform cosmetic dentistry and oral surgery. The school promotes its ability to help students find jobs in their local areas after they graduate.

    Nova Southeastern University

    • Located in the Fort Lauderdale area, Nova Southeastern University admitted its first class in 1997 to its College of Dental Medicine. The school features professors from throughout the country as well as the latest developments in video and computer technology. In addition to doctoral and post-doctoral degrees in specialized fields of dentistry, the college also has a limited number of openings in a three-year program for graduates of non-U.S. dental schools who wish to earn a U.S. dental degree.

      Students are strongly urged to take additional courses in the advanced sciences as well as courses in social sciences, accounting, communication, arts and sculpture, foreign languages and computer technology to broaden their educational backgrounds. Its main campus in Fort Lauderdale has seven dorms for undergraduate and graduate students.
