Established in 1636 by vote of the Great and General Court of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, Harvard University is the oldest institution of higher learning in the United States of America. Having celebrated its 350th anniversary in 1986, Harvard is older than the United States itself. It has produced many notable alumni, including eight presidents: John Adams, John Quincy Adams, Theodore and Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Rutherford B. Hayes, John Fitzgerald Kennedy, George W. Bush and Barack Obama. Harvard is located just outside of Boston in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology, or MIT for short, is one of the most famous tech-oriented universities in the country. The school's alumni include Lawrence Summers, former Secretary of the Treasury, actor James Woods (who dropped out a semester before graduating), 26 Nobel laureates, and 31 astronauts. Some of MIT's work is on display to the public, such asits work with robotics and artificial intelligence. That work is on display at the MIT museum. MIT is also in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

According to its website, Emerson is "the only comprehensive college or university in America dedicated exclusively to communication and the arts in a liberal arts context" Founded in 1880 by Charles Wesley Emerson as a college for speech and debate, the school has evolved into a school focusing on many disciplines, including communication, marketing, communication sciences and disorders, journalism, the performing arts, the visual and media arts, and writing literature and publishing. The school has produced notable actors, such as Denis Leary, Henry Winkler, Richard Dysart and Jay Leno. Emerson's main campus is located right next to the Boston Commons in the heart of the city.
