Annapolis, Maryland, is known as the "Sailing Capital of the World." The city, located within 40 miles of Baltimore and the Nation's Capital, is rich with military history. It is also home to some of the most prestigious colleges in the United States.
  1. St. John's College

    • Founded in 1696 and chartered in 1784, St. John's College is one of the oldest colleges in the United States. Four of the college's founders were men who had signed the Declaration of Independence: William Paca, Thomas Stone, Samuel Chase and Charles Carroll. According to St. John's official website, Charles Carroll was also the wealthiest man in America at the time.

      Spanning 43 acres, the college has an international undergraduate population of approximately 450 to 475 students at its Annapolis campus. Faculty-to-student ratio is 1 to 8. As of February 2010, the college's annual tuition was $39,992, with an additional $9,600 for room and board.

      Undergraduate and graduate programs are offered across various fields including liberal arts, sciences and social sciences. Part-time study tracks are offered to students who work full-time while they attend college. Student clubs and organizations, like the Johnnie Croquet Club and the King William (theater) Players, are available for students to participate in.

      Financial aid is available for students in the form of grants, loans, scholarships and work study programs. Average total financial aid packages are $31,160, with $23, 630 of that amount coming from federal, state and local grants. St. John's College is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, the American Academy for Liberal Education, and the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.

    United States Naval Academy

    • The United States Naval Academy was founded in 1845 by then Secretary of the Navy George Bancroft. Academic programs include a core curriculum of science, military, and liberal arts programs like engineering, math, and humanities. Navy and Marine Corps personnel hoping to become officers enter the academy to receive rigorous academic and physical training. Interested applicants are encouraged to apply to the academy in April of their junior high school year and January of their senior high school year. Applicants must be United States citizens, single, without dependents, and between 17 and 23 years of age at the time they apply.

      Tuition and room and board for qualifying and accepted students are paid by the United States Navy. Students sign a contract stating that they will serve as an officer in the Navy for four or more years. While attending the academy, students receive a monthly stipend of $864.

      Annually, approximately 4,000 men and women are enrolled at the four-year undergraduate academy. Faculty-to-student ratio is 1 to 8. The college is accredited by the Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, the Computer Science Accreditation Commission of the Computing Sciences Accreditation Board, and the American Chemical Society.

    Anne Arundel Community College

    • Anne Arundel Community College is located three miles outside of Annapolis. The school offers certificate and associate degree programs. Courses are available in several fields including arts and sciences, business, and technology. Students can also take non-credit continuing-education and distance-learning courses at the college.

      As of February 2010, tuition is $86 per credit hour for residents of Anne Arundel County, and $165 for residents living outside of Anne Arundel County. Financial aid is available in the form of scholarships, grants, loans and work study programs. Upon graduation, students are able to transfer earned credits to a four-year college to earn their bachelor's degree.

      The college is located close to the Chesapeake Bay and the United States Naval Academy. Approximately 23,000 students were enrolled at the college in 2009. Founded on January 2, 1961, Anne Arundel Community College is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools and the Maryland Higher Education Commission.
