Hood College was founded in 1893 as the Woman's College of Frederick. In 1897, the college was officially chartered with the first baccalaureate degrees awarded 1898. Today, the private liberal arts school sits on a 50-acre campus and offers 28 undergraduate programs, master's degrees and post-baccalaureate certificates. Founded in 1971, Garrett College is a public community college. Garrett offers two-year degrees in a variety of programs, including its unique adventure sports program and natural resources and wildlife technology. In addition to degree programs, Garrett offers a number of credit and non-credit certificate programs. In 1993, Garrett opened its first residence hall; today on-campus housing is available to approximately 200 students.
