Universities & Colleges in Alabama

In 2010, U.S. News and World Report ranked one of Alabama's private colleges among the nation's top 100 liberal arts colleges, and two of its public research universities among the nation's top 100 universities. These institutions offer 4-year undergraduate degree programs in a wide variety of fields, and the universities also offer a range of master's and doctoral degree programs that can prepare students for almost any career. Alabama's top-ranked colleges and universities all have academic traditions that date to the mid-19th century.

    • Birmingham-Southern College is a private liberal arts college that was founded in 1856. The college remains affiliated with the United Methodist Church. As of 2009, the school had about 1,600 undergraduates. Students can pursue undergraduate degrees in over 50 fields, including the humanities, sciences and mathematics, business, visual arts and education. Students can also enter the college's preprofessional studies programs or the honors program. In its 2010 ranking of liberal arts colleges, U.S. News and World Report ranked Birmingham-Southern College 92nd.

    • Auburn University, commonly referred to simply as Auburn, is a public research university that was founded in 1856. As of 2009, the school had over 20,000 undergraduates and over 3,200 graduate students. Auburn students can work toward undergraduate and graduate degrees in a wide variety of academic and professional fields within the university's 14 colleges and schools. Auburn also offers continuing education and online education programs, as well as study abroad and honors programs. Auburn University tied for 88th place in U.S. News and World Report's 2010 ranking of national universities.

    University of Alabama

    • The University of Alabama, commonly referred to as Alabama or 'Bama, is a public research university that was founded in 1831. The university now functions as the University of Alabama System's flagship institution. About 28,800 undergraduate and graduate students attended the university as of 2009. Alabama students can pursue bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees in hundreds of different academic and professional fields within the university's 13 colleges and schools. The university also offers continuing education programs. The University of Alabama tied for 96th place in U.S. News and World Report's 2010 ranking of national universities.
