Established in 1856, Auburn University is now one of the largest universities in the southern United States. It offers undergraduate, graduate and professional degrees in 13 different schools and colleges. Accredited by the Commission of Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, Auburn offers many programs that are top ranking in their field. The U.S. Department of Agriculture ranks Auburn's Department of Fisheries as the top fisheries graduate program in the country. DesignIntelligence Magazine ranks Auburn's School of Architecture as the second most admired undergraduate architecture program in the country. Many other programs at Auburn are ranked in the top 10 in the country.

Founded in 1881, with Dr. Booker T. Washington as the first teacher, Tuskegee has grown into one of the most recognizable historically black universities in the world. Diverse: Issues in Higher Education ranks Tuskegee as one of the Top 100 historically black universities, and U.S. News and World Report ranks Tuskegee as number 6 out of 70 historically black colleges and universities. Their Veterinary program produces 75 percent of the world's African American Veterinarians, and they are a top producer of African-American chemical, electrical and mechanical engineering graduates.

Spring Hill College was founded in 1830, making it the southeast's oldest Catholic College and Alabama's oldest college altogether. This private liberal arts college is ranked in the top 15 Southern colleges and universities by U.S. News and World Reports. In 2009, there were just over 1,500 students enrolled, 62 percent of which were women and 61 percent were Catholic. There are 40 undergraduate majors, with business and the sciences being the most popular. And there are Master's programs available in business, theology, education, liberal arts, and nursing. Approximately 30 percent of students go on to graduate or professional school.
