Princeton University was founded in 1746. Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, was established in 1766. This public research university had about 52,000 undergraduate and graduate students as of 2009. The school has campuses in New Brunswick, Newark and Camden. In 2010, the New Brunswick campus tied for 66th in U.S. News & World Report's ranking of national universities. The New Brunswick campus contains 14 colleges and schools, including the graduate school, a college of nursing and the schools of arts and sciences, environmental and biological sciences, planning and public policy, pharmacy, business, the arts, communication and information, engineering, management, social work, applied and professional psychology, and education.

Drew University, a private university, was founded in 1867 as a theological seminary. As of 2009, the school had about 2,700 undergraduate and graduate students. The university contains three primary divisions: the College of Liberal Arts, the Drew Theological School and the Casperson School of Graduate Studies. Undergraduates can choose from 32 majors and 19 minors, as well as preprofessional programs in engineering, medicine, law and education. Drew University also offers adult and community continuing education programs. Drew University tied for 68th in U.S. News & World Report's 2010 ranking of liberal arts colleges.
