Top New Jersey Colleges & Universities

New Jersey is home to several highly ranked colleges and universities, including one university that tied for first in U.S. News & World Report's 2010 ranking of national universities and two other schools that ranked among the top 70 in the same ranking of universities and liberal arts colleges. New Jersey's top schools can prepare students for further education or employment in almost any field.
  1. Princeton University

    • Princeton University was founded in 1746. As of 2009, this private research university had about 5,000 undergraduates as well as 2,500 graduate students studying within three graduate schools, including the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs, the School of Engineering and Applied Science and the School of Architecture. Undergraduates work toward Bachelor of Arts degrees in nearly 30 different fields or Bachelor of Science Engineering degrees in seven different fields. It is relevant to note that 18 Princeton faculty members and 14 alumni have won Nobel Prizes. Princeton University tied for first among the nation's universities in U.S. News & World Report's 2010 ranking.

    Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey

    • Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, was established in 1766. This public research university had about 52,000 undergraduate and graduate students as of 2009. The school has campuses in New Brunswick, Newark and Camden. In 2010, the New Brunswick campus tied for 66th in U.S. News & World Report's ranking of national universities. The New Brunswick campus contains 14 colleges and schools, including the graduate school, a college of nursing and the schools of arts and sciences, environmental and biological sciences, planning and public policy, pharmacy, business, the arts, communication and information, engineering, management, social work, applied and professional psychology, and education.

    Drew University

    • Drew University, a private university, was founded in 1867 as a theological seminary. As of 2009, the school had about 2,700 undergraduate and graduate students. The university contains three primary divisions: the College of Liberal Arts, the Drew Theological School and the Casperson School of Graduate Studies. Undergraduates can choose from 32 majors and 19 minors, as well as preprofessional programs in engineering, medicine, law and education. Drew University also offers adult and community continuing education programs. Drew University tied for 68th in U.S. News & World Report's 2010 ranking of liberal arts colleges.
