Famous Tennessee Colleges

Two of Tennessee's most recognized colleges have been made famous by their athletic teams. The University of Tennessee has gained national prominence because of its men's football team and women's basketball team. The University of Memphis is known for its research departments and for its men's basketball team. Vanderbilt University in Nashville has an extensive medical center that features five hospitals.

    • Vanderbilt is a private school in Nashville with an annual enrollment of approximately 12,000 students. Vanderbilt features 11 different schools for undergraduates, graduates and professional degrees, including divinity, law and medicine. The School of Arts and Sciences has the largest annual enrollment at Vanderbilt University, with more than 4,100 students. The Vanderbilt University Medical Center features five hospitals that specialize in psychiatry, cancer and pediatric care. Vanderbilt University fields 15 men's and women's athletic teams that compete in 12 different sports in the Southeastern Conference on the Division I level.

    University of Tennessee

    • Founded in 1794 as Blount College, the University of Tennessee in Knoxville has an annual enrollment of more than 27,000 students. The school awards undergraduate, graduate and professional degrees in more than 300 areas of study. The University of Tennessee is ranked as the 52nd best public school in the country by U.S. News & World Report. The school fields 19 men's and women's athletic teams in 13 different sports that compete in the Southeastern Conference on the Division I level. The two sports that have defined the University of Tennessee the most are football and women's basketball. The men's football team has won six NCAA national championships, while the women's basketball team has won eight national titles.

    • The University of Memphis, which has an annual enrollment of approximately 21,000 students, is recognized for its strength in its research departments. The public institution has research centers in technology, intelligent systems and earthquakes. The University of Memphis offers undergraduate degrees in more than 50 different major areas of study, graduate degrees in 45 subjects and 21 professional degrees. The school fields 17 men's and women's athletic teams that compete in 11 different sports that compete in Conference USA on the Division I level. The men's basketball team has helped the University of Memphis gain national recognition by advancing to 22 NCAA basketball tournaments.
