Vanderbilt University is one of the largest of Tennessee's private colleges with a total enrollment of approximately 12,000 students. The university offers over forty undergraduate and graduate degree programs in eleven schools; including law, medicine, nursing, music, engineering and divinity. Vanderbilt is home to an athletic department that is active in the Southeastern Conference of the NCAA Division I.

The University of the South, also known as Sewanee, is a small liberal arts college affiliated with the Episcopal Church. Undergraduate students may pursue degrees in thirty-six areas of study while graduate students may pursue advanced degrees in ministry, theology, divinity, preaching or Anglican studies. In 2006, Sewanee created the School of Letters which offers summer masters degree programs in English and creative writing .

The Memphis College of Art is a professional center for art and design.
