Interior Architecture Graduate Schools

Interior architecture combines interior design and architecture. Interior architects work with interior structure to create a pleasant environment for the people who work and live inside a structure, according to the "Princeton Review." Architects design buildings to coincide with their surroundings; however, interior architects design building interiors--from furniture and room texture to windows and walls--to coincide with the lives of inhabitants. Most interior architects earn bachelor's degrees, and some who want to work on higher profile projects and fill head architect positions earn master's degrees. A number of schools offer graduate programs for interior architecture.

  1. Rhode Island School of Design

    • The Rhode Island School of Design offers the Master of Interior Architecture degree--a program ranked the best of its kind by "U.S. News & World Report" in 2009. The program prepares future interior architects to create and re-create interiors of all types using classic and contemporary design techniques. The program is primarily made up of studio course work, which includes attention to details, space, lighting, technology, drawing and history involved in interior architecture.

      RISD's MIA degree takes three years to complete and is for students with bachelor's degrees in unrelated studies. The school offers an advanced standing master's degree--a two-year program--to students with architecture-related bachelor's degrees.

    University of Oregon

    • The Department of Architecture at University of Oregon in Eugene offers the Master of Interior Architecture degree, an accredited program by the Council for Interior Design. The program is highly regarded by architecture and design firms alike, according to the website, and produces professionals in fields that include set design, interior design, architecture, lighting and exhibit design. The program takes about three years to finish and ends with a capstone design project, pre-approved by a faculty adviser.

    Academy of Art University

    • The Master of Fine Arts in Interior Architecture, offered by the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, prepares students for professional careers in interior architecture and interior design through course work in theory and history, and studios that emphasize technology and artistry. At the end of the three-year program, students are required to complete a final project in which they select a local site to redesign for functionality and interior look. The project must display an execution of principles learned during the program, as well as meet and exceed faculty standards.
