Public Architecture Schools

Architects design indoor and outdoor structures and supervise construction from the plan to the final brick and project budget, future maintenance costs and environmental impact. Landscape architects design parks and outdoor spaces for beauty and functionality. Both types must complete post-secondary education to obtain a license to practice. In 2008, architects earned a median annual salary of $70,320 and landscape architects earned $58,960, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

    • The School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture at Arizona State University's Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts offers bachelor's to Ph.D. degree programs. Undergraduate degrees include architectural studies, housing and community development, landscape architecture and design studies. Master's degrees can be earned in architecture, landscape architecture, build environment and urban design with an option for pursuing an MBA concurrently. Doctorate students can pursue the Ph.D. in environmental design and planning. Freshman students must complete a degree milestone process at the end of the year to qualify for enrollment in the degree program. Students can participate in research and learning opportunities at the on-campus Phoenix Urban Research Laboratory for 21st-century development studies.

    Clemson University

    • Clemson University, South Carolina's only architecture program, received its accreditation in 1953. Degree programs in the program continue to the Ph.D. level. Undergraduate students can pursue a four-year bachelor's degree in architecture or an architecture minor to complement a major in another discipline. At the master's level, architecture majors can choose a master of science in architecture or architecture and health. Doctorate studies include a Ph.D. degree in Planning, Design and the Built Environment, which has an architecture concentration. Through the Fluid Campus initiative, undergraduate students can attend one semester in Genoa or Barcelona. Seniors in high school should apply early in the fall for admission to the competitive major program.

    University of Illinois-Chicago

    • The School of Architecture at the University of Illinois-Chicago (UIC) has undergraduate and graduate degree options. A bachelor's degree in architecture, a professional master's of architecture and post-professional master's degrees in architecture and architecture and health design. Incoming freshman should apply for admission by January 15 of their senior year. UIC gives priority consideration to master's students who apply by January 15, with a University Fellowship opportunity when applying by December 15. Non-degree seeking students cannot be admitted to the program. Students have study abroad opportunities in Berlin, France, Hong Kong and Barcelona.
