Sustainable Architecture Schools

Sustainable design, also called green or environmental design, is based on creating homes and buildings made with renewable resources that take a minimal toll on the natural world and immediate environment. Principles behind sustainable architecture include the use of non-toxic, biodegradable materials, creating energy efficient environments and using high quality materials that won't often need to be replaced. An increasing number of architecture schools now offer degree programs for architects and designers interested in green building and concepts.
  1. Carnegie Mellon

    • Carnegie Mellon School of Architecture offers a Master of Science in sustainable design. The year-long program is oriented towards practicing professionals and recent graduates who want to focus on sustainable architecture and green building projects. The program covers several aspects related to sustainable design, including architecture, ecology, construction, engineering, interior design and others. To graduate, students must complete 120-hours of coursework during a full-time, two-semester residency and work on green building projects. Courses include LEED Buildings and Design Concepts, Environmental Sustainability in Engineering and Sustainable Community Development.

    University of Texas at Austin

    • University of Texas at Austin has a sustainable design department that offers a variety of degree programs in green building and related fields. Along with a Master of Science in sustainable design, students can get related degrees, including a Master of Science in Sustainable Technology Integration and a Master of Architecture degree with an emphasis or specialization in the field. The program focuses on natural building systems, along with the ways that physics and ecology relate to architecture. Students take coursework based on technical, practical and philosophical aspects of green design, attend lectures and focus on a research project related to their area of interest. The programs are structured to prepare students for careers in building, research, activism and public policy.
