Slippery Rock University is among the largest universities located in western Pennsylvania. The campus sprawls over 600 acres, with 48 buildings total. The faculty number is more than 400. Additional expansions such as apartment-style residences and new recreational facilities are planned for the future. The university opened in 1889 and started off as an educational training college. Additional majors were added in 1960. There are over 100 majors offered in many different disciplines, and over 7,000 students are enrolled at Slippery Rock.
