Harrisburg Area Community College offers options for students wanting to pursue an associate's degree or unsure about the degree they wish to obtain. Founded on Valentine's Day, 1964, HACC has grown considerably. The college now has additional campuses in Gettysburg, Lancaster, Lebanon and York. The college also offers an extensive array of courses through its virtual campus. The college serves the needs of about 15,000 credit seeking students each year. Of these, about 3,300 pursue their degrees through distance education. The school also offers vocational and continuing education courses for non-degree seeking students. Over 50,000 students attend classes at HACC for these types of classes. The school offers associate's degrees in a variety of fields including: art, sociology, communications and foreign language, industrial technology, global studies, physical education, nutrition and nursing.

Widener University also has a campus extension in the city of Harrisburg. With its main campus in the city of Chester, Pennsylvania, Widener serves the educational needs of over 6,500 students each year. The school has additional campuses in Exton, Pennsylvania and Wilmington, Delaware. The school offers associate's, bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees. The school offers undergraduate degrees in a wide variety of fields such as nursing, science administration, special education, gender and women's studies, government and politics, engineering, anthropology and accounting. Temple University also has a campus extension in Harrisburg. With its main campus in Philadelphia, Temple University is one to the the state's most prestigious universities. The campus in Harrisburg is primarily devoted to students in one of three academic disciplines: education, community planning or social work. Students at TUH can pursue a Master of Social Work, Master of Science in Community and Regional Planning, Master of Educational Administration, Master of Education in Educational Psychology and a Doctor of Education degree.
