Graphic Design Colleges in Pennsylvania

The U.S. Department of Labor predicts that the demand for graphic designers in the Pennsylvania will increase by approximately 3 percent from 2006 through 2016. Competition will likely be high and holding a postsecondary degree in graphic design can help set applicants apart. A number of colleges in Pennsylvania offer such programs, allowing students to develop their design skills and build portfolios to show future employers.
  1. Moore College of Art and Design

    • Located in Philadelphia, Moore College of Art and Design is a private, nonsectarian institution for women with 500 undergraduate students, as of June 2010. The Bachelor of Fine Arts in graphic design is the most popular academic program at the college. To receive admission to the school, students must submit a portfolio of artwork. Those admitted to the program complete course work in typography, digital imaging, web design, three-dimensional design principles and design systems. All students must complete a semesterlong internship and submit a senior design project prior to graduation. Students at Moore can participate in federal and state financial aid programs.

    Moravian College

    • Affiliated with the Moravian Church of America, Moravian College is in Bethlehem, a suburban area 60 miles north of Philadelphia. Home to more than 2,000 undergraduate and graduate students, as of June 2010, the college received the 122nd-place ranking among all liberal arts colleges in the United States from "U.S. News and World Report" in 2010. The college offers a Bachelor of Arts in graphic design program and requires a portfolio submission from all students who apply for admission. Among the courses required for the program are art history, color, drawing, painting, topography, photography and publication design. Students also have the option to take courses in web design and animation. During their senior years, students submit a portfolio for faculty review to graduate. An internship is mandatory for graphic design majors. Approximately 95 percent of freshmen and 93 percent of continuing students at Moravian receive some type of financial aid, according to the "2009 Barron's Profiles of American Colleges."

    Mercyhurst College

    • The Roman Catholic Church founded Mercyhurst College in 1926 in Erie. Among the programs available for the school's more than 4,200 undergraduate and graduate students is a Bachelor of Arts program in graphic design. A portfolio is not required for admission to the program. Students spend their first two years in the program completing core course work in art history, drawing and two- and three-dimensional design. During their sophomore years, students submit portfolios to a faculty panel to move onto the professional phase of the program. The final two years of study include classes in typography and electronic image manipulation. All students at Mercyhurst have the opportunity to participate in internships and study-abroad programs in a number of countries, including Australia, England and Ireland. About 90 percent of all students receive financial aid, according to the "2009 Barron's Profiles of American Colleges," and graphic design students are eligible for special art scholarships.
