According to the U.S. Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics, the interior design profession was expected to grow by approximately 19 percent from 2008 to 2018 with a projected total of 85,600 jobs. Interior designers may work for architectural firms, commercial corporations, or private clients choosing furnishings, creating spatial arrangements, selecting room and office color pallets, or even adding artwork and decorative items.

    • Abilene Christian University is a private Christian-oriented Texas school with a wide variety of undergraduate and graduate programs. The Art and Design Department offers a bachelor of science in interior design degree that is accredited by the Council for Interior Design Accreditation. Graduates will be prepared for either an entry-level career in interior design or to pursue graduate-level study in a design specialty. The 128 credit hour curriculum includes university core courses in Bible studies, English, speech, history, science, and math, as well as fine arts and design major required classes. Specific interior design classes focus on aesthetic principles and design theory such as introduction to interior design, architectural design, interior components, and the history of architecture and furnishings.

    Art Institute of Dallas

    • The Art Institute of Dallas offers a bachelor of fine arts in interior design. Students take a comprehensive 190 credit hour curriculum that includes classes in art history, computer assisted drafting, decorative arts, architecture, lighting practices and other related design concepts. All students must complete general education requirements such as mathematics, oral communication, psychology, writing, global economics and environmental science. The bachelor of fine arts program can be completed in 12 quarters of full-time study.

    Stephen F. Austin State University

    • Prospective interior design students in Texas may be interested in the bachelor-level program at Stephen F. Austin State University. This CIDA-accredited program enables graduates to find entry-level employment in residential or commercial interior design companies and businesses. Students must complete a minimum of 120 credit hours in general education, social and natural sciences and specialized interior design courses. Senior-year students may participate in an internship at one of the many Texas-area design and architectural companies. Past internships have been held at Furniture Market Group, Neiman Marcus, Baron Design Group and Michael Barnham Architects.
