Colleges in Baltimore Offering an LPN Certificate

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the employment rate for Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN) is expected to increase by 21 percent between 2008 and 2018. LPNs usually assist physicians and/or Registered Nurses (RN) with basic bedside care for patients, which includes recording vitals, dressing wounds, or assisting with hygiene. One typically qualifies to become an LPN in about one year through a certificate program, usually offered in community colleges or trade schools. There are several such programs available for students in Baltimore, Maryland.
  1. Community College of Baltimore County

    • This community college offers a 12-month LPN certificate program at its Dundalk campus in the southeast part of Baltimore metro. Courses include adult health care, maternal/child health care, and introduction to pharmacology. There are no prerequisite courses, but the school recommends completing a list of preliminary non-nursing courses before applying to the program, including biology, anatomy and physiolgy, and college-level composition. Students who enter the program without these preliminaries must complete them before graduating.

    Baltimore City Community College

    • Baltimore City Community College houses its nursing program at its Liberty Campus. Its LPN certificate program is completed during three semesters, including summer study. Courses include adult health nursing, introductory psychology, calculation of medications and practical nursing issues. Two semesters in anatomy and physiology are prerequisite for entry into the program, as well as one course in microbiology.

    Sojourner-Douglass College

    • The college's website says this school is an independent institution originally established for the education and empowerment of members of the African-American community. Its LPN certificate program is offered as a three-semester exit option within its nine-semester bachelor (BSN) degree program. Courses include dosage calculations, pharmacology and a foundations of nursing lecture, lab and practicum. Prerequisite general education and science courses include (but are not limited to) anatomy and physiology, introductory psychology, English composition and college-level math and reading. Some prerequisites may be considered fulfilled via a placement examination.
