University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) St. Margaret School of Nursing in Pittsburgh has a one-year diploma program for licensed practical nursing. Program applicants must have a high school diploma or GED and pass a pre-admissions test. LPN coursework includes administering medicine, IV therapy, diet therapy, mental health, caring for families and medical surgical nursing. The program also includes clinical instruction and practice which takes place in hospital and community facilities. St. Margaret's also offers a registered nurse diploma program.

Pittsburgh Technical Institute is in Oakdale Borough, 16 miles outside Pittsburg. The school offers a certificate program for licensed practical nursing. Students with a high school diploma or GED are qualified to enter the program. Students will learn nursing foundations, biology, human behavior, nutrition, pharmacology and nursing for different patient groups such as geriatrics. The program takes 12 months to complete and includes both classroom and clinical instruction.

Western Area Career and Technology Center in Canonsburg is 21 miles outside of Pittsburgh. The school offers an LPN program that can be completed in 12 months by full-time students and 24 months by part-time students. Students spend more than 1,500 hours in classroom and clinical instruction. Students study basic sciences, legal and ethical issues, geriatrics, labor and delivery, common diseases, and human growth and development. Program applicants must be at least 17 years old, have a high school diploma or GED and pass an entrance test and criminal background check.

Students take some non-nursing classes such as English, biology, information technology, psychology and human growth and development. Nursing coursework is taught in classroom and clinical settings. Students learn the LPN role, how to administer medicines, maternity, pediatrics, venipuncture, disease, injury and long-term care.
