Accelerated Dental Schools

Accelerated programs are usually for students who already have a degree or students who are pursuing a combination degree. These programs cut down on the time it takes to receive a dental degree. Generally, you must receive special permission to enter these programs, but individual requirements vary by school. Contact the school for program availability, requirements and tuition.
  1. UMDNJ

    • The University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey in conjunction with Saint Peter's College offers a combination undergraduate and doctor of dental medicine degree. This is an accelerated program that allows you to earn both degrees within seven years, eliminating one year from the undergraduate degree. To qualify for this program, you must be a high school student with a minimum Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) score of 1250 and you must graduate in the top 10 percent of your class. This school started in 1954, and it is located in Newark, New Jersey.

    Detroit Mercy

    • The University of Detroit Mercy's School of Dentistry has an accelerated dental program; this program is for students who graduated from a foreign dental school and wish to work in the United States. You must also have a United States post-graduate degree in a dental specialty. Upon completion of this program, you receive a doctor of dental surgery. You can usually complete this program within two years, but you may also pursue a three- or four-year program. This school is located in Detroit, Michigan, and it has about 100 academic programs. The school started in 1877 and it is part of the Society of Jesus and the Religious Sisters of Mercy Catholic organizations. Usually, over 5,000 students enroll in the college per year.

    Boston University

    • This school offers an accelerated seven-year liberal arts/dental education program, and this is combined bachelor of arts and doctor of dental medicine degree. Students complete their undergraduate coursework within three years and start on the dental degree in their fourth year. You can complete the program within seven years. Boston University is located in Boston, Massachusetts, and it is located on a 133-acre campus. It has over 250 programs of study and over 75 study-abroad programs.

    Stevens

    • The Stevens Institute of Technology has an accelerated, combined degree program for dental, law and medical programs. You finish your bachelor's work within three years and actually receive the degree after you start your first year of dental school. You receive a doctor of dental medicine when you finish the program. To qualify for this program, you must have an SAT score of at least 1400 and you must graduate within the top 10 percent of your high school class. This school is located in Hoboken, New Jersey, and it started in 1870. It attracts over 2,000 undergraduate students each year.
