Fort Scott Community College is based in Fort Scott but has satellite class locations in other communities as well. The KBEMS-approved classes are held in the communities of Fort Scott, Frontenac and Paola. Frontenac, 4 miles from Pittsburg, is the closest. Fort Scott is 30 miles away---a reasonable drive from Pittsburg. Paola, however, is 97 miles away. FSCC offers EMT-Basic and EMT-Intermediate instruction but not paramedic programs. The EMT-Basic program is a 10-hour course; however, a shorter 6-hour program is offered for students already certified as first responders. The EMT-Intermediate program is a 5-hour course, with EMT-Basic certification a prerequisite for admission. FSCC also offers EMT refresher courses as required for maintaining EMT licenses.

Missouri Southern State University, located at Joplin, Missouri, offers EMT-basic and EMT-Paramedic instruction that meet national curriculum standards. The EMT-Basic program is a 6-hour program culminating in the national registry examination. Students who successfully pass the national registry exam can apply for the paramedic program. The paramedic program consists of two 12-hour courses followed by a 9-hour course which students must complete in sequence. While the 29-mile drive to classes at Joplin is reasonably short, the process of getting a license in Kansas requires a few more steps. After successfully passing your test and being placed on the National Registry, KBEMS must approve your non-Kansas credentials before issuing your Kansas license.
