Employment opportunities for registered nurses (RNs) are expected to increase faster than the national average for other occupations over the next several years. Training programs for RNs can be vocational programs culminating in a diploma or college degree programs toward an associate's or bachelor's degree. Registered nursing programs in Washington State are typically associate's or bachelor's programs.

    • While the School of Nursing of this multi-campus state school is headquartered in Spokane, the nursing program functions in partnership with Whitworth University and Eastern Washington University, allowing students to earn a Bachelor's in Nursing degree (BSN) from multiple locations in eastern Washington. Courses include anatomy/physiology, microbiology, human nutrition, professional development, community health nursing and practicum courses. This degree program is geared toward first-time nursing students with no previous experience, so pre-requisite courses for the nursing major are included in the first two years of study.

    Seattle University

    • This private Jesuit college in Seattle offers a four-year bachelor's degree program for RNs in the context of the Jesuit tradition of social justice and service to the community. Courses include anatomy/physiology, philosophy of the human person, theology/religious studies and pharmacology, as well as nursing care for children, adults and older adults. Geared for students without prior experience, the program includes pre-requisite classes in the first two years of study.

    Peninsula College

    • Located in Port Angeles in northwest Washington, this college offers an Associate of Applied Science degree (AAS) in nursing, qualifying students for the RN licensing exam. A few pre-requisite courses, such as anatomy/physiology, microbiology and English composition, must be completed prior to acceptance into the program. Nursing courses include clinical pharmacology, nutrition, and nursing practices. An advanced placement option into the course is available for Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) as space permits.

    South Puget Sound Community College

    • Located in Olympia, this public college has arranged its nursing program in a successive three-tier progression. Students first qualify as Certified Nursing Assistants by completing the pre-requisite courses, which include college math and English, anatomy/physiology, microbiology and others. The second tier qualifies students as Practical Nurses after the first year in the nursing program, while students continuing into the third tier earn an associates degree and qualify as RNs. Training includes therapeutics and technology, women's health nursing, family centered nursing, mental health nursing and others, accompanied by clinical practice.
