Indian River State College is a public institution in Fort Pierce, Florida. The college grants a two-year Associate of Applied Science degree in restorative dentistry for would-be dental laboratory techs. Portland Community College is a public, two-year school located in Oregon's largest city, Portland. The college offers two programs in dental laboratory technology: an Associate of Applied Science and a certificate of completion. Both programs require two years of full-time study to complete and incorporate the same courses in dental laboratory technology, including anatomy, first aid, science of dental materials, dentures, communications, dental specialties and management. Students in both programs complete a clinical placement in a dental laboratory prior to graduation. The only difference between the two courses of study is that degree students must complete electives not directly related to the necessary skills for dental lab technology, such as economics, environmental science, nutrition and sociology; certificate students only take courses in dental laboratory technology.
