Founded in 1965, the John Jay College of Criminal Justice, City University of New York, is a public institution in New York City. Home to more than 15,000 undergraduate and graduate students, the college received the 121st-place ranking among all universities in the northern United States in the "Best Colleges 2011" rankings from "U.S. News and World Report." During the first three years of the college's Bachelor of Science in forensic science degree program, students complete foundation coursework in biology, general and organic chemistry, qualitative analysis, physics, law and evidence, instrumental analysis, probability and statistics and biochemistry. Students then elect to specialize in criminalistics, toxicology or molecular biology during their senior years. Either a research or clinical internship is required for graduation in each specialty area. A master's degree in forensic science is also granted.

The university offers a Bachelor of Science in chemistry degree program with a concentration in forensic science. Among the scientific and mathematical courses required for the program are qualitative and instrumental analysis, physical and organic chemistry, biochemistry, physics, insect biology or local flora, calculus and statistics. In addition, students take criminal justice-related classes in criminology, evidence and procedure, investigations and ethics.
