British Film Schools

Those who feel a pull toward film production don't necessarily have to flock to Hollywood. Film schools the world over cater to people looking to learn about camera operation and directing or writing for the camera. Although many schools in Great Britain feature a film program, several schools are specifically designed for film, television and acting. Most of these schools offer both undergraduate and graduate degrees in areas of film study whereas others have only bachelor's or master's programs. Students may have to apply for permission to study in the U.K. and obtain a visa prior to being accepted at these schools.
  1. National Film and Television School

    • In 1971 the National Film and Television School opened as The National Film School in Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire, England. Acclaimed actor Richard Attenborough serves as the current president of NFTS, as of 2011, and Spike Lee once taught a course at the school. NTFS offers two-year master's programs in areas such s cinematography, screenwriting and editing. The diploma courses given by the school--production management and sound recording for film and television--only accept U.K. and European Economic Area (EEA) residents.

    London Film Academy

    • The London Film Academy opened its doors in 2002, determined to offer a different kind of film school experience. LFA encourages not just technical knowledge and earning a diploma but establishing industry contacts, an essential part of the film industry. The school offers certificate and diploma courses, in addition to short, foundation and specialized courses for those who want a brief course in a desired subject. Certificates can be issued in documentary and filmmaking. Diploma courses include filmmaking, screenwriting and a hybrid of the two.

    Met Film School

    • Located in London, Met Film School makes up one-third of the overall organization Met Film, the other two parts being Met Film Production and Met Film Post. The school teaches students of any level of knowledge about filmmaking the ins and outs of the industry. Students enroll in either the one-year program or the two-year bachelor's program in filmmaking, cinematography and visual effects and animation. Those seeking a master's degree can study filmmaking as a full-time student or part-time by taking each course individually.

    Futureworks Media School

    • Manchester's Futureworks Media School educates students in multiple media fields, including audio, film and TV and games. The Film and Television department at Futureworks features a two-year diploma course in TV and film production, as well as a degree course in visual effects and post-production. The school also offers short courses in camera and lighting technique, Avid Media Composer and Final Cut Pro.

    East 15 Acting School

    • East 15 Acting School's undergraduate courses consist primarily of various acting fields, but postgraduate studies include a master's course in filmmaking. The program seeks to train students with hands-on learning in camerawork, directing, lighting and sound. The course lasts for four terms, with the first introducing students to the art of filmmaking and working to build knowledge from there. By the fourth term, students create their own independent project and a written dissertation.
