Canadian Military Boarding Schools

Parents often resort to military boarding schools to instill in their children self-discipline, a high level of education and in some cases as a way of dealing with teenage troubles. According to a study by the The Association of Boarding Schools, TABS, students at boarding schools spend an average of 17 hours on homework and only three hours a week watching television. The same study reported that 52 percent of former boarding school students achieve top management positions. Often, graduates from Canadian military boarding schools and academies go on to serve in the army, navy and air force branches of Canada's military forces.
  1. History

    • In the past, Canada had a variety of pre-university military boarding schools. These included the Royal Military College of Canada at Kingston, the Royal Roads Military College in Victoria and the College Militaire Royal de Saint-Jean. However, due to budgetary difficulties in the 1990s these military schools only maintain their college level boarding schools. Currently, the only pre-university military boarding school in Canada is the Robert Land Academy at Welland, Ontario.

    Robert Land Academy

    • The Robert Land Academy at Welland, Ontario, is a not-for-profit boarding school, which was founded in 1978, and currently caters for 160 boys with ages ranging from 6 to 12. Boys diagnosed with special needs due to difficulties with their attitude, concentration or respect are also accepted and provided special attention. In 2009, the school reported the majority of their students improved by a full letter grade and that all graduates who applied were accepted into the university of their choice.

    Royal Military College Saint-Jean

    • The Royal Military College Saint-Jean of Quebec is a military boarding academy for students with a high school diploma who wish to continue their studies at the Royal Military College of Canada. The academy offers two-year programs that can qualify students for a college diploma in Social Science or Science.

    Royal Military College of Canada

    • The Royal Military College of Canada was established by the Canadian Parliament in 1874. The college offers boarders who complete their courses successfully the opportunity of receiving commissions as officers of the Canadian Forces as well as a Bachelor's degree. Graduates from the Royal Military College of Canada have served in the South African War, both the First and Second World Wars, Korea and the Gulf Wars.
