The Mount Carmel College of Nursing (MCCN) is a private, Catholic nursing school affiliated with Mount Carmel Health System (mountcarmelhealth.com) that operates hospitals in central Ohio and is a member of the Trinity Health System (trinity-health.org), a national group of hospitals. The school has a campus in Columbus, Ohio and in Lancaster, Ohio. The school aims to develop quality health care professionals with a solid science-based education and practical skills sets. The Lancaster campus is on-site at the Fairfield Medical Center where students follow courses in state-of-the-art classrooms and labs and practice clinic skills in the medical center itself.
MCCN offers a variety of degree programs to fit the needs of both tradition and non-traditional students. The four-year bachelor of science in nursing degree is designed for traditional students entering college for the first time. Students follow basic education courses at the University of Ohio at Lancaster before beginning nursing theory and clinical practice at the Fairfield Medical Center campus. The Advanced Placement Program and Second Degree Program allows students that have already taken general education courses or already completed a bachelor's degree to begin directly with nursing theory coursework and finish their degree in less time. The school offers a program for registered nurses, already practicing nursing, to get a bachelor of science degree. The flexible program includes online classes and allows work experience to replace clinical practice requirements. The school also offers masters degrees is in adult health, family nurse practitioner, nursing administration and nursing education.
The bachelor's degree curriculum includes general education requirements that are mostly in the social sciences and sciences. Students then go on to take nursing theory and specialized science courses in subjects like anatomy and physiology, nutrition and physiological alterations. Nursing theory courses like caring health practices is divided into six courses that take a holistic approach to teaching pharmacology, family and mental health, adult, older adults, child and family health practices. Clinical practice hours are obtained within the framework of the courses and specialized to the topics covered in the theory course so that students are able to discuss theory of subjects and practice them at the same time.
The school offers admissions in the fall and has limited enrollments based on space in the spring. First time college students must provide a high school transcript, essay, resume and standardized test scores with their applications. Home schooled students must provide additional documentation including certification from the school district, GED test scores and course syllabus. Transfer students must submit college transcripts and are exempt from the standardized test requirement. Foreign students must submit a photocopy of a green card or visa and Test of English as a Foreign Language scores.
