The dietetic technician track is a 64-credit program. Of the 64 total credits, 23 credits are earned from nutrition science-specific classes. "Fundamentals of Human Nutrition" is normally completed during the first semester of study. "Introduction to Dietetics" is the second program-specific introductory course. Follow up evidence-based study includes part one and two classes in clinical nutrition. The science of food microbiology is evaluated in theory and in a laboratory setting. Finally, students are prepared to interview clients about dietary habits and educate them about proper nutrition. Education is applied in practicum classes that credit students after successful completion of hands-on field work.
Prospective students may apply for admission to the dietetic technician program through Hillsborough Community College's online application. As of 2011, the application fee is $20. Applications are accepted throughout the year. If an applicant misses a semester deadline, an accepted application guarantees enrollment eligibility for the following semester. Applicants are required to have a Social Security number. They must also submit official transcripts from all secondary schools, post-secondary schools and/or general equivalence diploma scores.
Students may request that credits for classes taken in human biology, general psychology, college-level algebra, English composition and general humanities be applied toward program completion. Each of these courses is a Hillsborough Community College dietetic technician program prerequisite. After satisfactory prerequisite completion, students must pass and show proficiency in hospitality accounting, medical terminology, basic computers and technology, food and menu preparation, sanitation and safety management, and restaurant management, in both a supply purchasing and an employee supervisory capacity.
As of Fall 2010, program tuition is $94.32 per credit for Florida residents and $344.64 for out-of-state enrollees. Tuition includes fees for technology, application of financial aid and other miscellaneous administrative charges. Dietetic technician students are required to take two laboratory courses that charge fees separate from tuition. As of Fall 2010, Hillsborough Community Colleges charges a $20 laboratory fee for "Introduction to Computers and Technology" and $25 for the "Food Preparation for Managers." A separate fee is not charged for the "Food Microbiology Lab" course.
