Scholarships for GED Recipients

Nontraditional students who have completed a General Education Development (GED) program and earned a high school equivalency diploma may go on to continue their education at a college or university. The cost of higher education can be expensive, and there are several scholarship programs that include or are exclusively available to GED recipients to help pay for college expenses.
  1. Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship Program

    • The Robert C. Byrd Scholarship is funded by the Department of Education and is for graduates of high school or GED programs who have applied to or have been accepted by a college or university. Other requirements for the scholarship are that the student must be a legal resident of the state where she applies for the award, must certify that she is not ineligible for financial assistance due to a default on a federal loan, and file a Statement of Selective Service Registration Status with the school she plans to attend.

      The award is federally funded but state administered, and award amounts vary. The scholarship is designed for exceptional high school seniors who show promise to perform well in college. To apply to the Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship Program, students must apply with the state education agency in their state of legal residence.

    Education is Our Freedom

    • The Education is Our Freedom GED Scholarship Awards Program was created to give opportunities to GED graduates to attend an institution of higher education.

      To apply for the the Education is Our Freedom Scholarship, interested students must fill out an application that asks basic educational background information, complete an essay entitled "Why I Want to Go to College" and staple a copy of their GED certificate to their application.

    Capital One GED Graduate Scholarship

    • The Capital One GED Graduate Scholarship is a $1,000 award given in partnership with the Henrico Education Foundation. Applicants should be 19 years old or younger, have attended a Henrico public school in the past year, be a resident of Henrico County, Virginia and have completed the GED through a Henrico public school. Upon winning the award, the recipient has 60 days to notify the Henrico Education Foundation Program Manager of his higher education plans or the award will be given to another recipient.

      If the award recipient maintains a 2.0 GPA in school and there is available funding, the scholarship can be renewed annually for a total award of $4,000 over 4 years. To apply, GED graduates must fill out a form and complete a 200-word essay that discusses their future career goals and how the scholarship will help them attain them.
