Scholarships for Hispanic Students Pursuing Dentistry

Students of Hispanic ancestry planning a career in dentistry or another oral health field should consider applying for one of the many scholarship programs available to assist them with tuition and other educational expenses.
  1. The Hispanic Dental Association

    • The Hispanic Dental Association Foundation sponsors several different scholarships each year. Each scholarship awards different amounts of money and has specific requirements.
All require the recipients to be members of the Hispanic Dental Association (HDA) and to be accepted into an accredited dental, dental hygiene, dental assisting or dental technician program. The scholarships offered include the Colgate-Palmolive And HDA Foundation Scholarship, the Procter & Gamble Professional Oral Health and HDA Foundation Scholarship and the Dr. Juan D. Villarreal And HDA Foundation Scholarship.

    The American Dental Association Fund

    • Scholarships can be based on academic standing or financial need.

The American Dental Association (ADA) Endowment and Assistance Fund for Minority Dental Students offers money to students seeking education in dentistry. The fund offers ten awards of $2,500 each.
Applicants must demonstrate financial need, go to school full-time, and be a citizen of the United States. They must also have at least a 3.0 grade point average (GPA) on a 4.0 scale.
Because the ADA scholarship forms are exclusively distributed by school officials, interested students must contact the associate dean for student affairs at their school to request a scholarship application form and apply.

    Hispanic Scholarship Fund

    • The Hispanic Scholarship Fund offers financial aid to students of Hispanic background who are pursuing higher education in any field. All of these scholarships require that the student have a 3.0 GPA, be a U.S. citizen or legal resident, and be enrolled or plan to enroll full-time. They must also have already submitted a Free Application For Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
According to FAFSA, "Federal student aid is financial assistance that's available through the U.S. Department of Education's Office of Federal Student Aid." The financial aid covers tuition, fees, room and board. It can also cover transportation and books.
Many private scholarships require that students first apply for FAFSA before also applying for another specific scholarship.

    The Pierre Fauchard Academy Foundation

    • The Pierre Fauchard Academy, a society supporting the development and publication of scientific literature in the field of dentistry, also provides dental students with financial assistance. The academy foundation's Dental Student Scholarship Program funds scholarships at each U.S. dental school and select international schools of dentistry. Each scholarship award is for $1,500. The schools are asked to select a student at the beginning of the calendar year from the junior class. Criteria for selection are that the student has "demonstrated high leadership characteristics, has "well above average academic qualifications," and can also demonstrate financial need. Currently, 54 U.S. schools qualify and 28 international schools are chosen each year in countries that have active Pierre Fauchard Academy sections. Award decisions are made by the individual dental schools, which may have their own application or selection process.
