The Federal Scholarship for Disadvantaged Students is a good example of a student monetary award that is perfect for you if you're seeking a degree as a PA. It provides scholarships for those who come from financially needy backgrounds who are seeking careers in health-related professions. In order to apply, you must apply through the institution you are attending and demonstrate financial need by submitting your tax returns or those of your parents if you are a dependent student. Financial need is determined by the Health Resources and Services Administration, which is in turn administered by the Department of Health and Human Services. You must also be a citizen of the United States. One disadvantage of this scholarship is that far more fields than just physician assistants are eligible. A bigger applicant pool will likely mean a smaller chance of being selected to receive it.

The National Health Service Corps Scholarship meets any tuition, required fees and related education costs for students seeking a degree in a health-related occupation like physician assistant. The cost of your books, clinical supplies and lab expenses will be met by this scholarship. Your instruments, uniforms and travel-related expenses are also paid for. While the scholarship itself is tax-free, it also comes with a monthly living stipend that is taxable. To be eligible, you must be a U.S. citizen enrolled in a health-related degree program. You must commit to serve 1 year for each year of support, with a minimum of 2 years serving in an approved area where the need for medical treatment is high.

For over 20 years the American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA) has awarded nearly $2.5 million to PA students across the United States. In 2009, 56 students received a scholarship from this program. The scholarships are awarded on the basis of financial need, extracurricular activities and academic achievement. You must be enrolled in an accredited physician assistant's program, be enrolled in the professional phase of that program and be a student member of the AAPA. Applications close in mid-January.
