Undergraduate Scholarships for Developing African Countries

Many undergraduate scholarships are earmarked for Africans. Charity organizations, governments and competitive programs award these grants and scholarships to Africans who do not have many educational opportunities or resources to fund their schooling.
  1. Government Scholarships

    • African students can apply for commonwealth scholarships, since Britain, France and Germany primarily were Africa's colonizers. They are qualified to apply for Commonwealth scholarship and UK-affiliated scholarships such as the Commonwealth-Grenada St. George's University Scholarship Program, Commonwealth Scholarships, Canadian Francophone Scholarship Program, the Centre for French and Francophone Studies (CFFS) Scholarship Gumbo. Almost 50 percent of awardees of Afro-Francophone scholarships are Africans.

    Educational Charities

    • African students gain sponsorship through programs and trusts which espouse a particular focus on educating Africa. Such associations that link African students to financial aid in undergraduate study include the Kenya Youth Education Scholarship Fund, the Heriot-Watt University-African Watt Club Fund, the Working to Advance African Women Scholarship, the Africa Educational Trust, Educating Africans for Christ and the Undergraduate International Outreach Bursaries.

    Charities

    • In Africa's needy condition, Africans, as political and war victims, can avail themselves of scholarships based on refugee status such as the Refugee and Asylum Seeker Scholarship, Refugee Academic grants, East African Refugee Program, Assistance for Woman and Women Refugees, Airey Neave Trust-Refugee Support, Albert Einstein German Academic Refugee Initiative Fund (DAFI), Council for Assisting Refugee Academics and Windle Trust International.

    Foreign Colleges and Universities

    • Aspiring African students can seek undergraduate academic funding from universities through the umbrella international student awards, scholarship and grants. Canadian institutes and universities also offer scholarships for international students.

    Study Abroad Programs

    • Study Abroad programs allocate scholarships for Africans who need funding to further their education. In this era of globalization, traveling abroad as an exchange or foreign student is becoming the norm. International study abroad programs such as IIEPA Passport: Your Study Abroad Connection and Transitions Abroad, connect Africans desiring to pursue undergraduate study to sponsoring programs, grants and schools.
