Psychology Postgraduate Scholarships for Developing Countries

For scholars of psychology in developing countries, gaining necessary post-graduate experience can be challenging, especially since the field of psychology is still emerging in some nations. John Adair from the Journal of International Psychology states that psychology's roots lie in North American theory, potentially making the discipline seem like an "ill fit" in many non-Western cultural contexts. This disconnect leads to a lack of resources and opportunity for international psychology scholars. Fortunately, several organizations and institutions offer grants, usually in the form of fellowships or scholarships, to post-graduates in the field of psychology.
  1. School for Advanced Research

    • The School for Advanced Research (SAR) offers the Campbell Fellowship for Women Scholar-Practitioners from Developing Nations. The fellowship offers a monthly stipend of $4,500, health insurance, travel costs, housing and office space on the SAR campus. Female Ph.D. candidates or post-doctoral scholars from developing countries, or countries that are eligible to borrow from the World Bank, are eligible. Applicants must be in a social sciences field, such as psychology, be pursuing research with a focus on causes and solutions of gender inequity in the developing world, and be fluent in written and spoken English. One six-month scholarship is offered each year.

    Australian Psychological Society

    • The Australian Psychological Society offers the annual APS Grant for Intercultural and/or International Projects. The program "encourages and supports innovative projects that have an intercultural and/or international focus and is to be used for the establishment and implementation of a successful and sustainable project," according to the society's website. Post-graduate psychologists from developing countries and countries in which psychology is an emerging field are eligible to apply. Grants can pay for travel, living expenses, training and books. Grants range up to $10,000.

    Nordiska Afrikainstitutet

    • Sweden's Nordiska Afrikainstitutet offers the Guest Researchers at NAI-Africa program. According to the Institute's website, African scholars with a "track record of extensive post-graduate research" are eligible to apply. Female researchers receive preference. Research areas relevant to psychology include post-conflict transition, gender and violence, and youth and marginality. The 90-day grant includes airfare, a daily $40 stipend, $350 and office space.

    Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute

    • The Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute offers a post-doctoral fellowship. To qualify, applicants must have earned their Ph.D. within the past five years in academic fields including psychology, library and information science, anthropology and sociology. Fellowships range from three to 12 months and include a monthly $489 living allowance, $122 monthly research allowance, up to $181 reimbursement of affiliation fee, and round-trip airfare between Canada and India.
