Students who are residents of Oklahoma may qualify for the Rural Medical Education Loan Forgiveness Program. The state will repay loans and offers additional scholarships for medical students willing to practice medicine in a rural Oklahoma community for two years after graduation. The program was founded in 1975, and since then more than 400 students have received scholarships and loan forgiveness through this program. It offers up to $60,000 in scholarships to qualifying medical students, or $15,000 per year.

Medical students in Illinois can apply for the Allied Health Care Professional Scholarship Program. The Center for Rural Health in partnership with the Illinois Department of Public Health created this scholarship to provide more resources for rural and other underserved communities in Illinois. This scholarships aims to increase the number of midwives, nurses, and physicians assistants. Each year, several students receive funds of $7,500 dollars to practice in an underserved area in Illinois, many of which are rural areas that have few medical professionals.

Beginning in 2007, the University of Mississippi Medical Center began offering scholarships to aspiring physicians living in rural communities. The program aims to attract physicians in family medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, medical pediatrics and general internal medicine. The goal is to attract residents of Mississippi who are interested in attending medical school and then plan to continue practicing in a rural community in the state. In 2008, 10 students were awarded state funded scholarships valued at $30,000.
