The Alberta Rural Physician Action Plan (RPAP) offers the John N. Hnatuik Rural Medical Student Bursary to help students from rural areas become doctors. The award covers the full cost of tuition and is meant to "reduce the financial burden faced by rural medical students and their families," according to RPAP. Applicants must have lived in a rural community for five consecutive years out of the last seven, be attending the University of Alberta or the University of Calgary and belong to the Rural Medical Interest Group at either school. To receive the award, students must be willing to work for RPAP for three years after graduating from medical school.

Every year, the RBC Royal Bank Scholarship presents six $15,000 scholarships to students of dentistry and medicine, with two awards reserved for recipients who are also bank clients. To be eligible, applicants must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents and attending a publicly funded school. Applications are evaluated based on a combination of academic accomplishments, extracurricular activities and answers to essay questions and may be submitted in English or French.

Med students at Memorial University may apply for the Medical School Essay Graduate Student Award to help fund their studies. Award amounts vary, and applicants must write an essay of no more than 5,000 words on any topic related to medical science or medicine, with "an interpretative element that indicates the importance and relevance to medicine, health and society." If two equally excellent essays are received, the scholarship committee may present two awards instead of one, The winning essay--or essays--will be published in the Memorial University Journal of Human Health.

Medical school students who are focusing their studies on sexual and reproductive health can apply for the John and Lois Lamont Graduate Scholarship. Offered through a partnership with the Canadian Federation for Sexual Health, the $2,600 award can be used at any university. Applicants must already possess an honors undergraduate degree or its equivalent and must write a 500-700 word essay about their educational history, aspirations and experience with women's issues and sexual/reproductive health. The essay must also express the applicant's "support of the values and beliefs of the Canadian Federation for Sexual Health," according to the federation.
