Canadian Postgraduate Scholarships

A variety of scholarship opportunities are open to Canadian citizens who wish to pursue studies at the postgraduate level. While many postgraduate scholarships are open only to students attending certain universities, several come from branches of the Canadian government that are open to graduate students of any Canadian institution.
  1. NSERC Scholarships

    • The Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada offers two scholarship programs that help Canadian students pursue master's and doctoral degrees in the applied sciences and engineering. The Alexander Graham Bell Canada Graduate Scholarship provides $17,500 for one year of study at the master's level and $35,000 per year for up to three years of doctoral study. NSERC Postgraduate Scholarships provide $17,300 for one year to master's students or $21,000 a year for up to three years to doctoral candidates. Eligible students are Canadian citizens with a cumulative average of at least an A- for the previous two years of study. The annual deadline for direct application to the NSERC is Oct. 15.

    Joseph-Armand Bombardier Canada Graduate Scholarships Program

    • The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council provides scholarships to Canadian students pursuing master's degrees through the Joseph-Armand Bombardier Canada Graduate Scholarships Program. These non-renewable scholarships provide one year of support to master's students in the amount of $17,500. Eligible students are citizens of Canada pursuing their first postgraduate degree. The annual deadline for direct application to the SSHRC is Dec. 14. Students can apply for this scholarship through the financial aid office of their college or university.

    Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships

    • The Canadian government provides support to Canadian and international doctoral candidates through Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships. These awards provide $50,000 a year for up to three years. Eligible students must be nominated by a Canadian university and be pursuing (or intending to pursue) their first doctorate at a Canadian institution. Academic achievement, research potential and leadership qualities are the basis for the Vanier Scholarships. The annual deadline for application is Nov. 9.
