DAAD is interested in funding students doing research on Germany's relationship to the rest of Europe. Applicants must be of German heritage. According to DAAD, qualifying applicants receive a monthly stipend of up to $4,725 (EUR) depending on the seniority of the applicant; economy-class, round-trip airfare to and from Washington, D.C. (up to a maximum of $770), and office space at the institute. Part of the research is done in the United States and part in Germany.

Google offers funding to students who are currently enrolled in a Ph.D. program at a European university. The company is committed to funding students interested in doing research in technology, engineering and computer innovations. Google funds 10 students each academic year who express exceptional talent in science and technology. If accepted, Google covers tuition costs at the university for which the student is located, plus 3,000 euros for travel expenses and 2,000 euros for a computer.

Students who have obtained a master's degree in the social sciences and are beginning work toward a Ph.D. should consider applying for the Marie Curie Ph.D. fellowship program. Fifteen doctoral-level candidates will be selected to study and do research in nine European countries. Qualifying students will receive a three-year appointment to conduct educational research studies, and funding to cover research, travel and tuition expenses, as well as supervision in writing a thesis.
