Military Scholarships for Medical School

College can be an expensive endeavor, and medical school even more so. In 2008, the average cost of tuition for an in-state student at a public medical school was more than $22,000 a year. Average tuition at a private university was over $40,000. When you factor in room, board and food, it quickly becomes cost-prohibitive for many students. The good news is that the U.S. Armed Forces are in great need of medical professionals and offer excellent scholarships and financial assistance to qualified students.
  1. Army

    • The Army's Health Professions Scholarship Program (HPSP) offers full tuition at any accredited medical, dental, veterinary, psychology or optometry program. Students also receive a monthly living stipend, and certain qualifying medical and dental students are eligible for an additional $20,000 sign-on bonus.

Scholarship recipients have a service obligation of 1 year of active duty for every year you receive the scholarship. Minimum service obligations vary according to profession and specialty. There are additional obligations for residency and fellowship training. Contact your local Army Medical Recruiting Specialist or call (888) 550-ARMY for details.

    Navy

    • The Navy offers two different scholarship programs covering full tuition, a monthly stipend, sign-on bonus and housing allowance. They also offer financial assistance for doctors already in residency, as well as loan repayment programs for practicing doctors.

There is a minimum 3-year service requirement for all scholarship and loan repayment programs. Additional service time varies according to medical specialty and length of scholarship payment. Contact your local Navy Medical Recruiter for specific details on each program.

    Air Force

    • The Air Force offers Health Professions Scholarship Programs for pharmacists, optometrists, clinical psychologists, nurses, doctors, dentists and public health officers. Scholarships include full tuition, books and fees, and a monthly living stipend. There is additional financial assistance for those already in residency programs.

Recipients are required to serve 45 days per year in active duty while students. Upon graduation, there is a service obligation of 1 year active duty for each year on the scholarship with a minimum of 3 years service required. Contact your local Air Force Health Professions Recruiter for more information or call (800) 588-5260.

    National Guard

    • The National Guard does not offer scholarships to medical school students; however, they do have two programs for medical and dental professionals already in practice. The Medical Professions Officer Bonus offers a $15,000 to $75,000 sign-up bonus to medical professionals who commit to a 3-year service agreement. The exact amount varies according to profession and specialty and is paid out over the course of 3 years. The Loan Repayment Program provides up to $120,000 in loan repayment assistance to medical and dental providers who commit to 3 years of service. The amount varies according to specialty. Contact your local National Guard Recruiter or call (800) GO-GUARD for details.
