The Army Emergency Relief Fund offers grant assistance to active members of the U.S Army and the Army National Reserve and their dependents, as well as to widows and orphans of former Army personnel. These grants are awarded to help pay for essentials such as medical or dental care, food and rent, as well as funeral expenses. Award amounts are based on needs and circumstance. The VA Mortgage Center provides scholarship assistance to students with connections to the military through its Military Education Scholarship Program. VAMC Military Education Scholarships provide bi-yearly $1500 scholarships to qualified individuals. Approximately five scholarships are awarded every year. Eligible applicants include ROTC students, veterans and active-duty personnel who wish to return to college and dependent children or spouses of current or former military personnel. In addition to filling out an application, applicants must also submit an essay on a subject specified by the VAMC. The United States Department of Veterans Affairs provides grant money to qualified current and former military personnel through the Automobiles and Adaptive Equipment for Certain Disabled Veterans and Members of the Armed Forces. These are one-time grants to assist disabled personnel and are awarded for vehicle purchases in amounts not to exceed $11,000. There is no statutory limitation on grants intended for the purchase of necessary adaptive equipment. Disabilities must be connected to military service for applicants to be eligible. Eligible disabilities are limited to the loss of one or both hands, one or both feet, or the permanent impairment of both eyes. In addition, service personnel with ankylosis in their knees or hips are eligible for adaptive equipment grants only. Interested persons should contact their regional VA office to obtain an application.
