Personal Grants in Illinois

There are many grants available to students trying to find a way to pay for their schooling in Illinois. Charities, corporations, public and private institutions, nonprofit organizations and schools all offer scholarships to Illinois residents. Thanks to the generosity of these institutions, finding a way to fund your education need not be overwhelming. There are awards for particular areas of study and life situations or affiliations, need-based grants for those who are financially burdened and merit-based scholarships for individuals who excel academically.
  1. Golden Apple Scholars Program

    • The Golden Apple Scholars Program is available to Illinois students by the Golden Apple Foundation, an institution dedicated to honoring Chicago's teachers. Applicants must be interested in pursuing a career in high-risk communities in Chicago, be academically accomplished, be a high school graduate and participate in their community. The award amount is $2,500 per academic year for freshman and sophomore students, and $5,000 per academic year for junior and senior students (as of August 2010).

    Illinois CPA Society Herman J. Neal Scholarship Program

    • The Illinois CPA Society Herman J. Neal Scholarship Program is available to Illinois students pursuing a degree in accounting. To qualify, you must be African-American, an Illinois resident, attending an accredited Illinois college or university, have at least a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale and plan on taking the CPA exam upon completion of the program. The award amount is between $500 and full in-state tuition and fees.

    ComEd/NLEI Latino Scholarship

    • The ComEd/NLEI Latino Scholarship is offered to an outstanding Illinois returning student by ComED and the National Latino Education Institute. To qualify, you must be of Latino heritage, be studying mathematics, sciences or liberal arts, and demonstrate academic excellence. The award amount is generally between $2,500 and $5,000 per academic year.

    Illinois General Assembly Legislative Scholarships

    • The Illinois General Assembly Legislative Scholarships are available to Illinois students by the local and state government. To qualify, you must contact your state senator and state representative. Each member of the general assembly is allowed to nominate two students for the award. Applicants must attend a participating Illinois college or university to qualify. The award amount varies, but is generally between $1,000 and $3,000.
