How to Decorate Toilet Paper Tubes for Preschool

Toilet paper tubes inevitably collect in every household. Rather than throwing them in the trash or recycling bin, you can use these little tubes as the ideal base for numerous preschool-age projects. Using acrylic paints, construction paper and a little bit of glue, a basic toilet paper tube can become an imaginative animal, creature or person in the hands of any preschool student. These items need a small amount of adult preparation before a preschool class begins to decorate the toilet paper tubes.

Instructions

    • 1

For each tube, cut out a piece of construction paper measuring the same height as the toilet paper tube and wide enough to overlap around the tube. Wrap a piece of white construction paper around each tube and glue into place over the tube. Allow to dry completely.

    • 2

Cut out circles, hearts, wings and stars on different construction paper colors.

    • 3

Set out a covered toilet paper tube, construction paper, construction paper cutouts, paints, paintbrushes, crayons, wiggly eyes and yarn at each work area for the children.

    • 4

Tell the children to decorate their toilet paper tubes as animals, imaginary creatures or even people. Show them how to use the paints and markers to draw all over the white toilet paper tube in any design they want.

    • 5

Help children glue on construction paper shapes, pieces of yarn, wiggly eyes and any other elements they want to add to their creations.

    • 6

Create legs by cutting popsicle sticks in half and gluing them to the body of the toilet paper tube. Place a dime-sized amount of glue on one end of the popsicle stick and press onto the toilet paper tube. Press in place for about 10 seconds.

    • 7

Let all of the creations dry in a clean, safe place for about a half hour before letting the children play with them.
