Autism Schools in Minnesota

For a child with autism, the right school not only makes a difference, but also creates a path. According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, children with autism don't know how to play interactively with other children. This kind of social disability in childhood creates strong challenges to a child's overall development and future. In Minnesota, there are five schools helping autistic children to face these challenges.
  1. Fraser School

    • Fraser offers education to preschool age children with typical needs, as well as to those with autism. Their program aims to maximize each child's potential in family, school and community environments. Further services include: diagnostic evaluation; individual, family and group therapies; skills training; and case management. Fraser's autism program serves infants through young adults and their parents or caregivers.

    Holland Center

    • While not a preschool, Holland is an autism center and day treatment clinic. Holland offers speech language services, occupational therapy, and music therapy, along with medical consulting, nutrition consulting, oxygen therapy, and food/allergy testing. It also focuses on keeping the facilities as nontoxic as possible, which includes being gluten and casein-free.

    Autism Matters

    • Autism Matters is a center offering an intervention program with a primary focus on speech therapy. In addition to providing speech-language therapy and oral-motor therapy, they organize creative and engaging social activities to encourage use of interpersonal skills. Instead of a one-size-fits-all approach, Austism Matters focuses on the needs of each child and adapts accordingly.

    Rochester Center for Autism

    • While operating a center-based program, the Rochester Center for Autism extends this program into homes to create better results. The staff has extensive experience in both center and home-based environments. This school's goal is to run a program that children want to be a part of, thus fun and play are major components in the learning process. In the classroom, staff use games to exercise body awareness, speech/oral motor skills and social interaction. They also use music therapy to promote use of motor skills, group interaction and personal expression.

    The Lazarus Project

    • Also a center that creates partnership between itself and home-based therapy, the Lazarus Project was founded in 2003 by parents of children with autism. The Lazarus Project offers daily in-clinic therapy, five days a week. They also encourage two to four hours a week of in-home therapy. With such a strong focus on parents being involved in an autistic child's therapy and development, at least one parent is required to participate in two hours of training with the lead therapist each week.
