Summer Animal Camps in Oklahoma for Kids

Summer camp is an excellent opportunity for your children to get out into the world and spend time making new friends, learning to be away from their parents and to become a little bit more self-sufficient. Older children might be eager to go to sleep-away camp and spend a week or more in cabins or tents with their peers, while younger children might be better suited to day camps.
  1. Grand Lake Horse Camp

    • This sleep-away equestrian camp for girls aged nine to 14 teaches campers of all skill levels how to care for and ride horses. The girls can choose to ride English, Western or both styles as well as learning how to groom, saddle and and feed their horse. Horses are assigned at the beginning of camp according to skill level. Sessions are one week long each, although riders may sign up for more than one session if they wish to stay longer. Two sessions each summer are designated for advanced riders only, perfect for the accelerated pace a more experienced rider would expect. The camp is on Monkey Island in northeastern Oklahoma.

    Majic Stables Summer Camps

    • Majic Stables in Norman, Oklahoma offers summer horseback riding camps for children ages five to 14, who are interested in learning to ride but aren't ready to sleep away from home. Sessions are five days long and your camper can sign up to attend half days, from 8:30 a.m. to noon, or full days, lasting until 5:30 p.m. Campers bring their own lunch each day. In addition to horseback riding, children will learn to groom, bathe, feed and clean up after the horses. At the end of each week-long session, the campers put on a small show for their families to demonstrate what they learned.

    Oklahoma City Zoo Day Camps

    • The Oklahoma City Zoo offers day camps each summer. Each camp is geared toward children of a specific age group and with a focus on specific animals. Children ages four to 11 may attend, and discounts are available for zoo members. The zoo's day camps are only a half-day long, from 9 a.m. until noon each day, and children should bring a sack lunch with them. Camps sessions run Monday through Friday from June until August and maybe paid for on a per-day basis.

    Oklahoma State University Veterinary Camp

    • If you have a high school-aged child who is highly interested in animals, speak to him about attending the Oklahoma State University Veterinary Medicine in Agriculture camp in Stillwater. This camp is a three-day experience geared toward older youth interested in veterinary science as a possible career. The camp attempts to show the students what exactly being an agricultural veterinarian entails. Students participate in field and lab work.
