How to Fix a Smart Board

In 1991, SMART Technologies, Inc. released the first interactive whiteboard for public use. A Smart Board is used to enhance cooperative learning in the classroom and has been shown to increase student motivation and interest. Its advantages are not only reserved for students. Teachers benefit from this tool that projects interactive media projects, plays movies and posts instructions on a large screen. Common frustrations from teachers often involve an inoperative Smart Board or one that requires extra maintenance. Learning solutions to a few common problems will have a malfunctioning Smart Board working in no time.

Instructions

  1. Permanent Marker Stains

    • 1

Spray whiteboard or glass cleaner directly onto the marker stain and let it dry.

    • 2

Wipe off the cleaner with a soft cloth such as an old T-shirt.

    • 3

Cover the stain with ink from a dry-erase marker if the cleaner does not work.

    • 4

Wipe off the ink with the cloth while it is still wet.

    Ready Light is Red

    • 5

Select a pen from the tray and insert the tip into the reset button. The button is located on the lower right-hand side of the Smart Board. The ready light should turn green.

    • 6

Unplug the USB cable if Step 1 is ineffective. Reconnect the cable.

    • 7

Press the reset button with the tip of a pen from the tray for longer than three seconds. If Step 2 is ineffective, this will prompt you to repeat the orientation of the board.

    • 8

Restart your computer if Step 3 does not result in a green ready light.

    Inaccurate Touch

    • 9

Orient the screen if your writing does not align with the tip of the pen. Begin the process by simultaneously pressing the right-click and keyboard buttons on the pen tray.

    • 10

Follow the steps to orient the board. Tap the marks on the screen with a pen from the tray rather than your finger so the touch is more accurate.

    • 11

Test the screen by writing with a pen from the tray when the orientation process is complete. Test the eraser as well.

Projector Image is not Aligned or Blurry

    • 12

Adjust the position of the projector if the screen size is accurate but not aligned.

    • 13

Adjust the zoom setting on the projector if the screen size is too large or too small.

    • 14

Adjust the focus setting on the projector if the image is blurry. Sometimes the zoom also affects the focus so you may need to adjust both.
