Students studying the solar system can learn the correct order of the planets by rearranging the planets into a correct order on the Smart Board. This lesson could be adapted for older students by incorporating more elements of the solar system, such as particular stars, constellations, the Milky Way and other celestial bodies. The Smart Board can have an image of the solar system displayed, and the teacher can rearrange the images of the planets so they are out of order. Students must come to the board and correct the order of the planets.
Teachers can use the Smart Board in an English class that is working on principles of grammar and proper sentence structure. The teacher can type a sentence onto the screen, and the students can use Smart Board pens to underline the sentence and separate the subject from the verb. Further, using the Smart Board's ability to cut and paste, they can move words around the screen to demonstrate a completely diagrammed sentence.
A teacher can create a lesson on fractions by putting images on the Smart Board that can easily be divided. These include a pizza, a pie or any other circular object. Pieces of these items can be cut, moved or deleted. By moving them to the side of the screen, students can see how many pieces it takes to equal a whole. This lesson can be expanded to teach addition, subtraction, and even multiplication using fractions.
Students can learn phonics lessons through interactive Flash games on a Smart Board. By manipulating spellings and letter arrangements, students can understand how the order of words affects the way they sound when spoken. Interactive phonics lessons also help students understand spelling, increase reading fluency and improve verbal skills.
