How to Set Up a SMART Board

Once you hang a SMART Board on the wall, a teacher or technician must install software and then make the correct connections so that the SMART Board operates as a touch input device. After installation, users "double-click" by tapping the board instead of using a mouse button. Completing these tasks requires a minimal level of technical knowledge.

Instructions

    • 1

Install the SMART Board software that came with the system. Insert the CD-ROM into your computer drive and follow the instructions that appear on your monitor. The standard setup will install SMART Board drivers and also a program called SMART Notebook which allows users to create interactive presentations.

Turn off your computer system and make USB connections. On the lower right side of the SMART Board there is a 9-pin serial port. Push the short connector on the USB cable into this port. This is the DB9 connector recognizable because it is the only end of the USB cable to have screws. Once the connection has been made, tighten the screws using the Phillips screwdriver.

Attach the other end of the USB cable to a USB port on your computer. This connection will not have any screws.

    • 4

Turn on your computer and allow time for a boot. The computer discovers the devices, and after a few more moments, announce when ready for use. The Ready Light at the lower right edge of the SMART Board turns red for a few moments but should switch to green when the system has fully booted. The green color indicates that the SMART Board is in communication with the computer.
