How to Set Up a Listening Post

A listening post is a designated area for listening to ideas, processing information and applying it to lessons. In a busy classroom, a listening post offers a comfortable physical layout that is free of distractions. Instructions

    • 1

Designate a space in the classroom to use as a listening post. Find a space that is free of distractions and located away from high traffic areas such as paths to the bathroom or pencil sharpener. The area must have electrical outlets available for audio equipment.

    • 2

Surround the area with bookshelves that form a barrier, separating the listening post from other classroom activities. Allocate enough space for two students and a teacher to sit and work comfortably.

    • 3

Further define the space with an area rug. Add throw pillows or an overstuffed chair for comfortable seating.

    • 4

Place a small table or desk in the area with two chairs. Use the table for written assignments or for communication drills.

    • 5

Add books, audio tapes, a tape recorder, listening headsets and a microphone. Store supplies neatly on a bookshelf.

    • 6

Place a small desk at the entrance to the listening post. Post a sign-in sheet and book log. Store comprehension tests or other curriculum paperwork in a file.
