How to Set Up a Managed Switch

A managed switch is a type of switch that has some special software that will allow a user to carry out functions of management on the switch. These functions include checking for errors on a port and referring to an IP address. This type of switch will also allow you to individually control ports of the switches. Managed switch is also the procedure that you need to connect to a Local Area Network.

Instructions

    • 1

Connect a serial cable on to the COM port on your laptop or personal computer and to the console port of your switch device. Click the start button on your computer and then find hyper terminal under the program files. Edit a name for opening the hyper terminal. Configure the COM port appropriately.

    • 2

Power on the managed switch and a display showing testing procedures will appear on the screen. Type in the login and username of the factory's default settings. Enter the commands of how you want to manage your switch.

    • 3

Configure the IP address settings for the Local Area Network. Upon configuring these settings, the managed switch will immediately conform to these settings. The Web interface of the managed switch can now be accessed.

    • 4

Log on to the Telnet configuration interface section. Put in the valid username and password. The managed switch provides a browser interface that is built in. Manage the interface using the available Web browser, such as Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox. You will be prompted to enter the valid password and username in the Web interface.

    • 5

Save the configuration settings. Save from the Random Access Memory (RAM) to a portable flash disk. The write command will ensure that the running configuration sequence becomes the startup configuration file, which is referred to as the configuration save.

    • 6

Log into the configured managed switch. Use the Web browser to enter the IP address to access the Web interface. Again enter the configured username that you had earlier entered via the console. A switch menu appears on the left of the Web page. This menu will let you access all statistics and commands the switch provides.
