How to Wire Carriage Lights

Carriage lights are used for security lighting as well as their beauty and aura, which give a homey feel to the surroundings. These benefits, as well as their low power consumption, are some of the factors that influence the type of lights you should install. Technicians may install the full system for a fee, or you may buy a do-it-yourself kit from a local store, then install and wire the carriage lights on your own.

Determine the places you intend to mount the light fixtures. Install the carriage light fixtures at the chosen spots. Refer to the installation manuals that came with the carriage lights. Use a power drill while boring holes for the installations to save time. If you are mounting them on walls, hammer in pieces of wood to fit into the holes then bore smaller holes in the wood pieces to make screw holes.

Switch off the main power at the control panel supplying electricity to the house. Open the electric box, pull out the circuit breaker designated for outdoor lighting, and loosen its screws to expose the three terminals inside. Strip off one end of a #12/2 direct burial landscape lighting cable long enough to cover the distance to where you will install the switch and screw the tip of the wire insulated in red to the terminal marked L for live in the circuit breaker. Fix the tip of the second wire, insulated in white, to the second terminal marked N of the circuit breaker and reinforce it with a screw. Replace the circuit breaker in place. Note that outdoor lighting wires are sheathed in weather proof and UV resistant material to protect the wires inside from damage.

Install a switch box at a convenient location along the path the wires are meant to run through. Reinforce it with screws or bolts, depending on the switch box size. Run the wire from the circuit breaker to the switch, open up the switch box then connect the two wires inside to the input terminals inside marked the same way as in the circuit breaker. Prepare another section of wire long enough to reach the lights from the switch, similar to the first section, and connect one end to the output terminals in the switch box, following the same guidelines to match the colors to the switch box terminals. Note that only the live wire runs through the switch so that the circuit breaks by cutting off the hot wire. The neutral wire should run through unbroken; therefore, connect the two neutral sections using a wire connector.

Connect the other end of the cable from the switch to the terminals on the lamp holder of the carriage light. If you are attaching several lights, connect each lamp in series by connecting the live wire to one terminal. Fix another live to the second terminal joined to the second lamp terminal and continue doing so for all subsequent lamps until you reach the last one, at which point the neutral wire of the circuit will connect. Cover up any naked wire section with electrical tape.
