Consult the authorities on the restrictions to building an aviary in your neighborhood. For example, there may be regulations regarding the kind of outdoor structure you may build especially if you reside in a town home or a planned housing development. There may be noise ordinances noise ordinances in your residential area as well.
Design a plan for your aviary and if possible, have it approved by an experienced avian zookeeper who will also advise you on the correct specifications. Your aviary should, for instance, consider the number of parakeets you have. The width for your aviary should be three times the bird’s wing span, the length six times the bird’s body and the roof four times higher than the bird’s body height.
Put down about a 12-inch slab for the concrete foundation before constructing the frame. Let the concrete dry and clean it with a hose. Add sand, wood shavings or gravel over the concrete which you may clean by scooping out after every couple of days. Allow some holes where you can plant non-poisonous foliage for the birds and provide a more natural environment for your parakeet.
Build the frame using metal, brick or stone. Build the walls and roof using a galvanized wire cloth whose size and spacing depends on the size and number of your birds. A 16-gauge wire is most suited for your parakeet aviary because it is lighter and still difficult to bend.
Put solid hardwood, shade cloth or corrugated plastic panels to the roof and two sides to shelter the aviary from strong wind, rain or heat. Close off the aviary completely if you live in a cold area or during winter. Use strong double doors which are efficient in preventing escape of birds.
Place wire 1/4-inch on the bottom half of each of the four sides and 1/2-inch wire on the top half to prevent predators such as snakes, mice, cats or raccoons. Install double wires and ensure the perches do not touch the sides of the structure for maximum protection, especially against raccoons. . Set up advanced security features such as a burglar alarm, automated lights, and gates or get a watch dog to protect the aviary and your parakeets from human intruders.
