How to Compare SMART Boards

SMART Boards are available in several models, each offering different features. Comparing SMART Boards is important prior to purchase so that you can get the features essential in your situation without paying for functions you may not need. Some of the important criteria to consider when comparing SMART Boards are network connectivity, lamp life, active screen area and theft protection.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Spread out the specification sheets for several models of SMART Boards and look for the words "Network Management" in the first column of each sheet's grid. This feature refers to the SMART Board's ability to hook into a network using Ethernet technology. Models in the 600i2 series lack network connectivity while the 600i3 and 685ix series can both connect to an IP network.

    • 2

Look for the words "Lamp Life" in the first column of each specification sheet. SMART Board projector lamps typically last at least 2,000 hours, but some models have lamps with higher longevity. The 685ix series lamps last 4,000 hours when used in economy mode. This equals an extra year of usage for the average classroom.

    • 3

Look for the words "Active Screen Area" on the first column of each specification sheet. This is one of the most important criteria for comparing SMART Boards since it indicates how much area of touch screen the unit offers. Model number SB685i3 offers almost 3,500 square inches of usable screen area. In comparison, model number SB660i2 offers only 1,960 square inches.

Look for the words "Theft Protection" on each specification sheet, again in the first column. Some units have a pen tray that locks while others include spaces for padlocks you to install on the mounting brackets that attach the SMART Board to a wall.
